DUBAI:Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has completed a two-kilometer expansion of Sheikh Zayed Road, a major infrastructure upgrade designed to ease vehicular congestion and cut travel times by up to 10 percent on one of the emirate’s busiest transit corridors.
The capacity expansion targets a critical bottleneck along the multi-lane highway, enhancing traffic intake and ensuring smoother merging patterns for thousands of daily commuters. According to operational metrics released by the transit authority, the widening increases lane capacity significantly, directly addressing daily gridlock during peak morning and evening hours.
Engineers widened the highway footprint to integrate additional lanes, reconfigure road markings, and adjust surrounding safety barriers without disrupting existing traffic flow during construction. The project forms part of a broader, phased master plan by the city’s transport authorities to overhaul key arterial networks and accommodate the rapid growth of Dubai’s urban population and vehicle volume.
Traffic management teams monitored vehicle movement along the upgraded section following the completion of physical works, confirming an immediate improvement in throughput and vehicle speed. Beyond cutting down individual transit times by 10 percent, the increased capacity reduces tailbacks at key off-ramps and arterial interchanges connected to the corridor.
Urban transit officials noted that the continuous enhancement of main highways like Sheikh Zayed Road remains vital to supporting the city’s economic movement, logistics sector, and expanding commercial hubs. Further structural adjustments and smart traffic monitoring systems are scheduled to be integrated into surrounding access points in upcoming development phases.
