Roads and Transport Authority becomes the first in the region to achieve international recognition for climate adaptation and circular economy standards.
DUBAI — In a significant move that reinforces its position as a global leader in urban mobility, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has secured three prestigious ISO certifications from the British Standards Institution (BSI). The certifications recognize the authority’s excellence in benchmarking, climate change adaptation, and circular economy practices, marking a historic first for public transport entities across the Middle East and Africa.
The first of these accolades, the Management Specification (PAS 7070), was awarded to the RTA’s Innovation and Pioneering Department. This certification highlights the authority’s success in developing an integrated management system that leverages data and comparative analysis to drive strategic decision-making and operational efficiency.
Pioneering Climate Resilience
RTA has made history by becoming the first entity in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to receive the ISO 14090:2019 certification for climate change adaptation. Awarded to the Safety, Risk, Regulation, and Planning Department, this standard validates RTA’s robust framework for managing climate-related risks and building infrastructure capable of withstanding environmental shifts.
This achievement aligns directly with the Zero Emission Public Transport Strategy 2050, a cornerstone of Dubai’s broader vision for sustainable development. By integrating climate resilience into its core operations, the RTA is ensuring that the city’s transport network remains reliable and sustainable amidst global environmental challenges.
Commitment to a Circular Economy
Furthering its green agenda, the RTA’s Assets Management Department has been recognized for its alignment with ISO 59004:2024, the international standard for circular economy principles. This makes the RTA the first government entity in the region to adopt these specific guidelines for resource efficiency and waste reduction.
As part of this initiative, the RTA has:
- Upskilled Personnel: Trained over 100 employees to manage and implement circular economy frameworks.
- Strategic Roadmap: Developed a comprehensive maturity measurement system and performance indicators.
- Governance: Established a dedicated policy defining the roles of circular economy coordinators across all agencies and sectors.
A Reference Point for Global Excellence
By securing these certifications, the RTA has cemented its status as a leading authority in benchmarking. The authority now serves as a global reference point for navigating organizational change and enhancing competitiveness. Through constant comparison with leading international entities, the RTA continues to foster a culture of innovation, ensuring that Dubai’s transport services remain at the cutting edge of global standards.
These milestones reflect Dubai’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and its transition toward a smarter, more resilient, and environmentally conscious future.
