Six extra services will inject more than 2,000 additional seats across Saturday and Sunday to ease commuter rush
ABU DHABI — Etihad Rail has expanded its weekend passenger schedule between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, adding six extra departures across Saturday and Sunday to meet heavy passenger bookings.
The developer and operator of the UAE National Railway Network opened bookings on Friday afternoon for more than 2,000 additional passenger seats across the two emirates, following an immediate run on regular scheduled trips.
The capacity boost brings three additional daily services on Saturday, October 3, and three on Sunday, October 4, providing roughly 1,000 extra seats on each day.
According to operator schedules, the timetable adjustments apply identical departure slots across both weekend days. Trains will depart Abu Dhabi for Dubai at 12:14 and 16:43, while an extra return service leaves Dubai for the capital at 13:43.
Etihad Rail made the extra inventory available across its digital booking channels starting at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 2. Regular ticket holders and weekend travelers had snapped up baseline allocations within hours of launch, prompting operations teams to deploy standby rolling stock.
The intercity rail passenger service links the country’s two major economic centers, offering an alternative to the heavily traveled E11 Sheikh Zayed Road corridor. Transit planners designed the passenger network to ease highway congestion, slash intercity transit times, and integrate major population centers across the Emirates.
Initial passenger volume reflects strong consumer appetite for rail travel among domestic commuters, weekend tourists, and cross-emirate business travelers seeking predictable transit times. Station concourses in both emirates have seen brisk footfall, with customer support teams managing platform boarding and digital ticketing validation.
Rail authorities confirmed that operational teams will track real-time booking trends and station foot traffic throughout the weekend to assess whether permanent timetable adjustments or further temporary capacity increases are warranted.
