Airlines monitor regional corridors, Saudi air defences down a Houthi missile, and diplomatic backchannels stumble over conflicting accounts of Washington-Tehran contacts.

DUBAI, Oct. 29, 2026 : Regional security concerns intensified across the Gulf on Thursday following claims by Iranian forces that three commercial tankers struck naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, while Gulf capitals stepped up diplomatic interventions amid reports of potential US-Israeli military strikes against Tehran.

The escalated alert across Gulf shipping lanes and aviation corridors comes as regional mediators, led by Qatar, seek to avert a direct escalation between Washington and Tehran.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated Thursday that three commercial crude carriers exploded and caught fire after hitting naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC claimed the vessels had switched off transponders, ignored naval radio warnings, and navigated an unapproved southern corridor. Maritime security authorities have not released independent confirmation regarding the registry, crew status, or exact coordinates of the affected vessels. The waterway handles roughly one-fifth of global maritime petroleum shipments.

Military tensions coincided with diplomatic cross-currents in Washington. Western diplomatic officials briefed on private discussions indicated that US officials cautioned several Middle Eastern governments to prepare defensive postures ahead of potential strikes following the November 3 US midterm elections. The planning, according to diplomatic sources, contemplates targeting critical infrastructure, leadership compounds, and nuclear sites if diplomatic deterrence fails.

The White House has declined on-the-record comment regarding military options, and US President Donald Trump has made no formal declaration authorizing armed action.

Simultaneously, accounts diverged over direct communications between Washington and Tehran. Reports by The Wall Street Journal and Axios stated that US Vice President JD Vance transmitted correspondence to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, exploring terms to reopen negotiations. While Trump acknowledged approving contact with Iranian officials, he publicly disputed the characterization of the outreach, asserting the channel focused narrowly on humanitarian medical supplies rather than comprehensive security negotiations.

Diplomats in Abu Dhabi reiterated calls for broad regional restraint, backing political de-escalation over confrontation. Saudi authorities also urged Washington to permit international intermediaries sufficient runway to test diplomatic solutions.

Yemen’s conflict added further friction to regional airspace. Saudi air defence forces intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile over the kingdom’s Eastern Province, according to coalition spokesman Brig. Gen. Turki Al Malki. Unconfirmed field reports also pointed to missile activity directed near Aden’s international airport in southern Yemen, keeping regional flight trackers on elevated watch.

For UAE residents and expatriates, the friction arrives alongside peak seasonal flight adjustments. Major regional carriers continue preparing winter capacity expansions, but operational schedules remain sensitive to rerouting notices around disputed maritime sectors and active air defence corridors in Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf.

Aviation and consular authorities advise passengers to track individual flight manifests directly through operating airlines before reporting to airport terminals. Travellers holding codeshare bookings should verify the operating carrier’s policy, and passengers crossing land corridors into Saudi Arabia are advised to reconfirm border transport protocols prior to departure.
