NEW DELHI – The political landscape of India stands at a pivotal juncture as the counting of votes for five Legislative Assemblies commences at 8:00 AM this Monday. Following a high-octane campaign and multiple phases of polling held throughout April, the electoral fates of candidates across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry will be decided today.
To ensure the integrity of the process, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has implemented an unprecedented security apparatus. This includes a robust three-tier security system and the debut of the ECINET QR code-based Photo Identity Card system, designed to eliminate unauthorized access to counting centers.
Kerala: A Battle for Survival and Supremacy
In Kerala, the stakes are exceptionally high for the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). Seeking a historic third term, the LDF faces a rejuvenated United Democratic Front (UDF), which enters the fray backed by a strong performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha and recent local body polls.
Notably, a defeat for the LDF would mark a significant shift in national politics, potentially leaving the Left parties without power in any Indian state for the first time since the 1960s. Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA aims to breach the traditional bipolar fortress of the state.
