Yemeni rebels report targeting key sites in Najran as Tehran warns Riyadh cannot contain the escalating border conflict
RIYADH / SANAA, August 20, 2026:Yemen’s Houthi movement launched two separate drone strikes on Thursday targeting a strategic airport and state oil giant Saudi Aramco’s facility in Saudi Arabia’s southern Najran border region, according to statements released by the group’s military command.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree confirmed the cross-border drone operations via Telegram, alleging that the strikes successfully hit a sensitive site inside Najran Airport alongside a major petroleum installation owned by Saudi Aramco.
The targeted facilities sit close to the border dividing Saudi Arabia and Yemen, where regional hostilities have intensified following the recent collapse of a multi-year ceasefire. Saree claimed the strikes were conducted in retaliation for alleged Saudi drone activity inside Yemen’s northern Saada province.
Saudi authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding potential casualties or damage at either site.
The cross-border operations came shortly after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a stern warning, stating that Saudi Arabia would find itself “unable to contain” Houthi military capabilities as cross-border strikes gather momentum.
Military sources on the ground and Yemeni government representatives fighting near the Red Sea coastline confirmed that Houthi forces are simultaneously preparing a broader southward ground push. Officials in Yemen warned that rebel units aim to expand control near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime corridor for international oil shipping.
Hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed group erupted again last month, ending a period of relative calm established during a 2022 truce. The group has since declared a maritime blockade against Saudi vessels while repeatedly targeting key airport and energy infrastructure across the kingdom’s southern borders.
