DOHA — September 21, 2026 : Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Qatar for high-level diplomatic talks on Sunday evening, making a strategic stopover in Doha to discuss escalating regional friction and maritime security before heading to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that Araghchi departed Tehran late Sunday, scheduling the brief stop in the Qatari capital to address rapid security developments across the Middle East. Qatar has maintained an active mediator role between Tehran and Washington throughout the conflict that erupted in late February.
A primary focus of the Doha consultations involves navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has reiterated its conditions through international interlocutors for easing restrictions on the vital trade corridor, where it currently demands commercial vessels obtain prior authorization before passage.
Iranian authorities cite national security and territorial sovereignty for the maritime controls, while also weighing a formal framework to levy service fees on passing ships. The maritime restrictions followed joint US-Israeli military strikes against Iranian targets earlier this year. Washington subsequently enforced counter-blockades targeting Iranian maritime terminals, leaving naval traffic in the narrow waterway largely immobilized.
Diplomats in Doha are expected to examine pathways to de-escalate the standoff before international leaders convene at the UN headquarters this week. Araghchi plans to continue his journey to New York following the Doha meetings to take part in ministerial sessions and multilateral debates on regional stability.
