Bhavana Studios co-founder says overseas distributors, theatre owners and taxes take more than half of the worldwide gross haul.
KOCHI, Oct. 5, 2026 : A historic worldwide gross of Rs 332 crore may dominate cinema trade headlines, but producer Fahadh Faasil clarified that producers never walk away with even half of that total, debunking common assumptions about box-office windfalls.
Addressing the staggering theatrical earnings of Girish A.D.’s romantic comedy Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, Fahadh pushed back against inflated public perceptions surrounding box-office numbers. In an interview with Cue Studio, the actor-producer noted that massive headline grosses mask steep logistical splits across the distribution chain.
“None of us will get even half of this Rs 300 crore that they are talking about. That is the gross collection,” Fahadh said, breaking down how the revenue funnel operates between the box-office counter and a production banner’s balance sheet.
Before earnings reach the production house, worldwide theatrical takings are heavily diluted. Roughly half of the global gross is absorbed by exhibitors, theatre owners, and overseas territory agents. Once mandatory levies—including Goods and Services Tax (GST) and local entertainment duties—are carved out, the remaining net share flows back to the primary financiers.
For Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, that final producer share belongs to Bhavana Studios, the creative partnership run by Fahadh alongside director Dileesh Pothan and screenwriter Syam Pushkaran. The project’s wide footprint was orchestrated in partnership with Bhavana Release, Future RunUp Films, and Hyderabad-based Mythri Movie Makers.
Fahadh emphasized that dispelling financial myths does not temper the production house’s excitement.
“The fact that Bethlehem has been a success is something that makes me very happy and proud,” he said, crediting the film’s crew. “It is not just me. There is Girish, Shyam, and Dileesh. I see this as a collective success of all of us. I don’t see it as my success alone.”
Starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju in the lead, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit currently sits as the highest-grossing Malayalam release in cinema history. Its global total of more than Rs 330 crore eclipsed the previous benchmark of Rs 304 crore set by Dominic Arun’s superhero outing Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films.
Written by Girish along with Kiran Josey, the romantic comedy features an ensemble cast including Suresh Krishna, Vinay Forrt, and Shyam Mohan.
Since its theatrical release on August 21 across 1,507 domestic screens, the movie demonstrated remarkable early momentum. It collected Rs 4.90 crore on opening day, surged past Rs 20 crore over its first weekend, and closed week one at Rs 50 crore. The second week held steady with an additional Rs 49.85 crore, pushing the domestic figure past the Rs 100-crore threshold.
Momentum gradually cooled in subsequent weeks, registering Rs 33.30 crore in week three, Rs 16.79 crore in week four, and Rs 8.80 crore in week five. At the close of six weeks, domestic collections crossed Rs 190 crore gross (over Rs 160 crore net), largely led by the original Malayalam cut alongside Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions.
Overseas markets delivered another decisive push, contributing approximately Rs 140 crore to finalize the film’s standing atop Malayalam box-office history.
