Project Included Construction of Four Bridges and Two Tunnels

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed all works on Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street Development Project, one of the key projects aimed at strengthening the integration of Dubai’s road network, improving connectivity between major traffic corridors, and keeping pace with the rapid urban and population growth in surrounding areas.
The project involved enhancing four major intersections, in addition to constructing four bridges and two tunnels spanning 4,300 metres in total, and 14 kilometres of roads. These works improve traffic flow, increase road capacity, and reduce journey time.
It serves numerous service, residential and development areas, most notably Za’abeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Maitha and Umm Hurair, as well as several vital facilities, including Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club. The population of the areas served by the project is expected to exceed 420,000 by 2030.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said the completion of Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street Development Project forms part of an integrated plan to develop Dubai’s road and transport infrastructure. The project keeps pace with the requirements of comprehensive development, accommodates the anticipated growth in population and traffic volumes, and supports smoother mobility and a better quality of life for Dubai’s residents and visitors.
Integrated Solutions
Al Tayer said: “The project represents an important addition to Dubai’s road network, given its key location and its role in strengthening connectivity between many corridors, residential and development areas, and service facilities. It also improves intersection efficiency, facilitates access to key destinations, and enhances traffic safety. The project reflects RTA’s approach to developing integrated and sustainable infrastructure solutions centred on anticipating future growth, supporting urban expansion, and improving the daily mobility experience of road users.”
He added: “The project increases the capacity of Oud Maitha Street from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles per hour in both directions, an increase of up to 50%, while reducing journey time from 20 minutes to five minutes, a 75% saving in time. This improves traffic flow and connectivity between Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street and the surrounding road network.”
Project Details
The project upgraded four major intersections. At the intersection of Oud Maitha Road and Sheikh Rashid Road, works included adding a lane to the left-turn ramp serving traffic from Oud Maitha Road onto Sheikh Rashid Road towards Al Garhoud Bridge, raising capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour.
Works also included upgrading the service road on Sheikh Rashid Road between the existing bridge and Al Zahrawi Street exit to resolve existing traffic overlaps and improve safety for road users. The number of right-turn lanes carrying traffic from Sheikh Rashid Road onto Oud Maitha Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road was increased from two to three, raising capacity to 4,000 vehicles per hour.
A tunnel was also constructed to connect the service road on Oud Maitha Road to Sheikh Rashid Road intersection, serving traffic heading towards Bur Dubai.
Three Bridges
The project involved enhancing the intersection of Oud Maitha Road with Al Asayel Street and Al Wasl Club Street through the construction of two bridges linking Al Asayel Street with Al Khail Road via Al Wasl Club Street. The first is a two-lane bridge with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour, serving traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Wasl Club Street. The second includes three lanes, with a capacity of 3,600 vehicles per hour, and serves traffic from Al Khail Road towards Al Asayel Street.
A separate two-lane bridge, with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour, serves left-turn traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Oud Maitha Road. Works also included improving the access road to Al Wasl Club, along with the entry and exit points on Al Wasl Club Street, to resolve existing traffic overlaps with the main road.
Bridge and Tunnel
The intersection of Al Wasl Club Street and Al Khail Road was also improved by constructing a two-lane bridge with a capacity of 3,000 vehicles per hour, serving traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Khail Road in the direction of Business Bay Crossing. Al Wasl Club Street was also improved by expanding the exit towards Al Khail Road to two lanes, constructing a service road in both directions, and providing parking spaces.
At the intersection of Za’abeel Palace Street with Al Khail Road and Oud Maitha Road, a lane was added to the left-turn ramp serving traffic from Al Khail Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road, raising capacity from 900 to 1,800 vehicles per hour. A single-lane tunnel, with a capacity of 1,200 vehicles per hour, was also constructed to serve traffic from Dubai–Al Ain Road towards the service road on Oud Maitha Road and resolve existing traffic overlaps.
The project further increased the number of lanes on the bridge serving traffic from Al Khail Road towards Oud Maitha Road from two to three, raising its capacity from 2,200 to 3,300 vehicles per hour.
