Midfield maestro anchors La Roja’s global conquest; Mbappe secures historic consecutive Golden Boot as Spain’s defense sweeps top honors.

NEW YORK, July 20, 2026:Spanish midfielder Rodri secured the adidas Golden Ball for the tournament’s outstanding player after anchoring La Roja to their second global crown with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina at the New York New Jersey Stadium. The individual honors heavily reflected Spain’s tactical stranglehold on the expanded 48-team tournament, with the European champions sweeping three out of four major individual accolades.

The 30-year-old Manchester City midfielder provided the structural spine for Luis de la Fuente’s side across eight matches. In a high-stakes final that Spain dominated with 20 shots to Argentina’s zero in regular time, Rodri completed 101 of 105 passes, won 80 percent of his duels, and created two chances before being substituted in the 98th minute. His defensive interventions and transition play allowed Ferran Torres to eventually strike the decisive blow in the 106th minute. The award stirred immediate football debate, as some analysts favored Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who received the Silver Ball after an impressive eight-goal tournament campaign. France’s Kylian Mbappe took home the Bronze Ball.

France forward Kylian Mbappe collected the adidas Golden Boot, making modern football history. Despite Les Bleus falling short of reaching their third consecutive final, Mbappe delivered a spectacular individual campaign, netting ten goals across eight appearances. The Real Madrid star became the first player in football history to win back-to-back World Cup Golden Boots, following his top-scorer finish at Qatar 2022. Mbappe concluded his campaign with a double in a thrilling 6-4 third-place play-off defeat to England. He edged out Messi (eight goals) and England’s Jude Bellingham, who took home the Bronze Boot with seven goals.

Spain’s record-breaking defensive resilience swept the remaining individual categories. Unai Simon received the adidas Golden Glove after recording seven clean sheets in eight games. The 29-year-old Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper established a new historical benchmark for the most clean sheets recorded by a goalkeeper at a single FIFA World Cup edition. Spain completed one of the strongest defensive campaigns in tournament history, conceding just a single goal—against Belgium in the quarter-finals—across their entire eight-match run.

Ahead of Simon, 19-year-old Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi earned the FIFA Best Young Player Award, presented by Aramco. Given to the tournament’s top player under the age of 21, the La Masia graduate anchored the backline that successfully nullified Lionel Messi and the Argentine frontline in Sunday’s final. Cubarsi joins an illustrious list of past young player recipients, which includes Brazilian legend Pelé (1958), Mbappe (2018), and Argentina’s Enzo Fernández (2022).

The FIFA Fair Play Trophy, presented by McDonald’s, went to the Netherlands.
