Republican election losses prompt debate over Iran strategy, Hegseth’s future, and Qatar-mediated diplomatic talks

WASHINGTON, United States — US President Donald Trump is confronting mounting political fallout over the Iran conflict following heavy Republican losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections, weighing renewed military strikes against a potential negotiated agreement.

Vice President JD Vance directly attributed the party’s electoral defeat to the ongoing military conflict, an assessment Trump acknowledged as “largely true.” The political backlash has triggered intense scrutiny within the administration, with Trump consulting aides on whether Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth should remain in his post. Hegseth faces mounting criticism from Republican lawmakers over the prosecution of the war, while congressional Democrats consider initiating an impeachment vote.

Trump’s administration is considering three distinct paths: launching renewed military strikes, pursuing a diplomatic pact, or maintaining sustained economic and military pressure on Tehran. Qatari mediators have advanced a draft framework aimed at resuming direct negotiations between Washington and Tehran within days.

Global crude markets responded sharply to indications that military escalation may pause. Brent crude dropped to approximately $93 per barrel on Thursday, reaching its lowest level in roughly two months after Trump stated that the United States holds no immediate plans to carry out strikes against Iran. The US military maintains combat readiness across the region while the administration evaluates its next strategic moves.
