UKMTO reports zero casualties and no oil spills after two separate strikes rattle commercial traffic near Oman and the vital energy corridor.

DUBAI — October 3, 2026:Two commercial crude oil tankers were hit by unidentified projectiles in and near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, a British naval monitoring agency said, escalating risks across the narrow waterway that handles a vital share of global petroleum transit.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said neither incident resulted in crew casualties or maritime pollution, though the attacks underscore persistent hazards facing merchant shipping around the Persian Gulf.

The first vessel was struck while exiting the Strait of Hormuz, sparking a localized fire and an electrical blackout. Crew members brought the blaze under control before emergency systems restored basic operations, allowing the vessel to resume its voyage. UKMTO did not disclose the ship’s flag, ownership, or sailing schedule.

Hours later, a second tanker sailing east of Oman reported a separate projectile strike. Its crew remained unharmed, and inspectors found no structural breaches or leakage into surrounding waters. Naval authorities in the region have launched an investigation into the origin of both strikes.

The incidents follow months of intense military pressure around the Strait of Hormuz, where roughly 20 percent of world petroleum and liquefied natural gas shipments passed prior to the outbreak of widespread hostilities earlier this year. Regional transit fractured following coordinated U.S. and Israeli air operations against Iranian positions in late February, triggering retaliatory measures against commercial vessels.

Tehran has repeatedly targeted merchant traffic passing through the strait, alleging unauthorized incursions into territorial channels. In response, Washington imposed a naval counterblockade designed to shut down Iranian crude exports, turning the strategic chokepoint into an active operational theater for naval patrols, drone reconnaissance, and surface strikes.

Commercial maritime risk insurers have maintained war-risk premiums near historic highs for Persian Gulf transits, while several international shipping lines continue to reroute tonnage around southern Africa to circumvent the strait and the Gulf of Oman entirely.
