Ali Saleh’s first-half stoppage-time strike cancels out Almoez Ali opener in Jeddah to secure a semi-final meeting against Oman

JEDDAH — 1 October 2026 :The United Arab Emirates secured first place in Group B of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup on Wednesday night, playing out a disciplined 1-1 draw against Qatar at King Abdullah Sports City to book a semi-final showdown with Oman.

Ali Saleh restored parity for Paulo Bento’s side deep into first-half stoppage time, cancelling out a 33rd-minute opener from Qatar captain Almoez Ali. The shared point lifted the UAE to seven points from three matches, keeping them ahead of Qatar on goal difference and cementing their position at the summit of the group.

Qatar, who entered the match matching the UAE stride for stride across the opening fixtures, made the early breakthrough. In the 33rd minute, Almoez pounced inside the box to drill home past UAE goalkeeper Khalid Eisa. The goal handed the Asian champions the upper hand, but the Emiratis adjusted their shape swiftly to press high up the pitch before the interval.

The persistence paid off four minutes into first-half injury time. Finding space on the turn, Ali Saleh struck cleanly past the Qatari defense to bring the UAE level, altering the tactical complexion of the contest just before the break.

The second half turned into a tactical chess match. Qatar pressed forward in search of a winner that would have leapfrogged them into first place, but the UAE backline held firm under sustained spells of pressure. Both managers deployed late substitutions to preserve fresh legs, with neither side willing to overcommit and risk defensive vulnerability.

By topping Group B, the UAE avoided a meeting with hosts Saudi Arabia, setting up a clash against Group A runners-up Oman. Qatar’s second-place finish sends them into a heavyweight tie against Saudi Arabia, who qualified atop Group A.

Both semi-finals will take place on Saturday. The UAE will face Oman at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City, kicking off at 22:30 UAE time (21:30 local time in Jeddah). Earlier that evening, Saudi Arabia and Qatar will contest the first semi-final at King Abdullah Sports City at 19:55 UAE time (18:55 local time).
