UAE Condemns ‘Terrorist’ Drone Strike Near Barakah Nuclear Plant as ‘Unacceptable Aggression’
Air defence systems intercept two drones; third strikes external generator triggering fire with no impact on radiation safety levels.
ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned an unprovoked “terrorist attack” targeting critical civilian infrastructure near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant on Sunday. Emirati air defence forces intercepted two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) entering from the country’s western border, while a third managed to strike an external electricity generator, triggering a localized fire. +1
Authorities immediately confirmed that no injuries were recorded and that the facility’s strict safety protocols prevented any radiological impact or compromise to the core nuclear systems.
Strict Security Protocols Thwart Escalation
According to a detailed statement released by the UAE Ministry of Defence, the country’s advanced air defence systems detected and engaged three hostile drones crossing into Emirati airspace from the western direction. While two of the incoming platforms were successfully neutralized, the remaining drone breached the outer perimeter, hitting an ancillary power unit outside the plant’s secure inner zone. +1
Emergency response teams contained the resulting fire rapidly. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) reassured the public that all four reactor units at the Barakah facility continue to operate normally and remain fully secure.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was promptly notified by UAE authorities. The UN nuclear watchdog confirmed that environmental radiation levels remain normal, noting that emergency diesel generators successfully stepped in to maintain auxiliary power supply to Unit 3.
A Grave Breach of International Law
Expressing sharp condemnation, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) classified the incursion as a “dangerous escalation” and an “unacceptable act of aggression” that poses a direct threat to regional stability.
“Targeting peaceful nuclear energy facilities is a flagrant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and established humanitarian norms,” the Ministry stated, emphasizing the immense risks such hostile actions pose to civilian populations and environmental security.
The UAE government further underscored its adherence to international frameworks, including IAEA resolutions mandating the absolute protection of civilian nuclear installations. Abu Dhabi stated unequivocally that it reserves its full sovereign, legitimate, diplomatic, and military rights to protect its territorial integrity, citizens, and expatriate residents against any cross-border hostilities.
Regional Implications and IAEA Reaction
The incident marks the first time a drone-related strike has landed in close proximity to the Arab world’s premier operational nuclear facility. The attack comes at a fragile time for regional geopolitics, amid complex efforts to sustain a tenuous US-Israel-Iran ceasefire structure.
In Vienna, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed grave concern over the incident, warning that any military or hostile activity threatening the safety and physical integrity of peaceful nuclear facilities is entirely unacceptable.
While comprehensive investigations are currently underway to trace the exact origin of the intercepted drones, UAE officials have reiterated their appeal to the global community to unequivocally reject attacks targeting vital civilian infrastructure. Authorities have also urged the public to rely strictly on official government channels for operational updates, discouraging the spread of unverified reports.
