All Android TVs are Smart TVs, but proprietary systems from Samsung and LG offer distinctly different software ecosystems, app libraries, and streaming capabilities.

NEW DELHI / DUBAI —Consumers shopping for a new television often treat the terms “Smart TV” and “Android TV” as interchangeable, yet the technical divide between them dictates everything from application availability to long-term software support.

While every television that connects to the internet and runs software applications falls under the broad category of a Smart TV, Android TV—alongside its modernized interface, Google TV—represents a specific operating system maintained by Google. Industry leaders like Samsung and LG power their screens with custom, in-house platforms such as Tizen OS and webOS, while brands like Hisense and TCL deploy either proprietary setups like VIDAA OS or licensed platforms including Roku OS and Google TV.

The practical distinction surfaces the moment a viewer looks beyond mainstream streaming platforms. Global giants including Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ maintain dedicated apps across almost every operating system. However, proprietary operating systems maintain closed ecosystems. Samsung’s Tizen and LG’s webOS rely on curated application storefronts hosting several hundred platforms. In contrast, Google TV and Android TV connect directly to the Google Play Store, granting access to more than 10,000 television-optimized applications.

This catalog disparity directly impacts users seeking regional programming, niche live sports, local language broadcast feeds, and utility software. On closed systems, if a regional broadcaster or independent developer chooses not to build and maintain a dedicated webOS or Tizen client, owners have no native way to install the service.

Android TV circumvents these store restrictions through application sideloading. Users can manually transfer and install installation packages (.apk files) via flash drives or local network tools. This architectural openness also accommodates advanced utility tools, including media engines like Kodi, VLC, and Plex, alongside native Virtual Private Network (VPN) clients such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark. Setting up encrypted network connections on proprietary Smart TVs requires routing the television’s connection through a configured router or physical hotspot, as their native app stores do not support VPN software.

Casting and smart-home management reflect similar architectural differences. Android TV hardware features built-in Google Cast (Chromecast), allowing direct content handoffs from Android smartphones, iOS devices, and Chrome browsers without third-party pairing tools. Proprietary screens rely primarily on Miracast or brand-level network sharing protocols, which frequently exhibit handshake failures across multi-platform households, though newer LG and Samsung models bridge part of this gap with Apple AirPlay 2 support.

Despite the broader flexibility of Google’s software, proprietary smart platforms retain notable hardware-level advantages. Because Samsung and LG design both their display hardware and underlying firmware, Tizen and webOS are engineered specifically for their respective chipsets. This tight vertical integration frequently yields faster system boot times, smoother menu navigation on entry-level processors, and specialized remote integration, such as LG’s motion-controlled Magic Remote.

Software longevity remains another critical evaluation point for buyers. Television manufacturers historically slow down or halt system updates for their proprietary operating systems after three to five years as engineering teams pivot toward newer hardware revisions. While Android TVs are also subject to manufacturer-level hardware lifecycles, Google decouples foundational system frameworks and core app compatibility through Google Play Services updates, allowing older panels to maintain streaming app functionality long after main operating system upgrades end.

For consumers whose viewing routines revolve strictly around major streaming portals, live sports feeds, and set-top box playback, the simplicity and speed of Samsung’s Tizen or LG’s webOS prove more than sufficient. Viewers requiring localized software, direct network streaming clients, native VPN security, and cross-device media casting, however, find Android TV and Google TV the more versatile foundation.
