The seven-and-a-half-month project delivers 4,160 parking bays, 53 upgraded roads, new public parks, and upgraded stormwater drainage networks across 185,000 square metres.

SHARJAH, Oct. 20, 2026 : Sharjah has introduced designated public motorcycle parking spaces for the first time in Al Yarmook, anchoring a comprehensive, 185,000-square-metre urban redevelopment project completed ahead of schedule.

Sharjah City Municipality confirmed Tuesday that the extensive rehabilitation of Al Yarmook concluded in seven and a half months, beating its initial one-year contractual deadline. Undertaken pursuant to directives from His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the project re-engineers vehicular and pedestrian movement across one of the city’s densest commercial and residential hubs.

A central milestone of the overhaul is the debut of dedicated motorcycle parking stalls, established to organize two-wheel transit, curb sidewalk obstructions, and modernize roadside vehicle management across the emirate. Alongside these designated spaces, the municipality created 4,160 paid vehicular parking bays situated along road corridors and open interior plots. Crews cleared and leveled 36 vacant parcels spanning roughly 31,000 square metres, setting aside specific plots for future smart parking systems and reserved school bus parking.

The civil engineering scope encompassed 53 roadways measuring nearly nine kilometres in length across 56,876 square metres of paved surfaces. Pedestrian infrastructure received equal focus, adding 41 walkways, corridors, and paved pedestrian paths spanning more than 31,320 square metres. Subsurface utility modernization saw teams install 14,800 linear metres of dedicated stormwater drainage and sanitary sewer networks, addressing seasonal water accumulation while reinforcing electricity, gas, and telecommunications trunks.

Public recreational spaces expanded through two new community developments. The primary facility spans 5,400 square metres and includes a shaded children’s play area, a regulation football pitch, public benches, and an on-site supervisory office. A companion park was planned around a preserved mature ghaf tree, integrating local ecological preservation directly into the civic footprint. Municipal crews planted 280 sea hibiscus and flowering trees along primary thoroughfares to soften the urban landscape.

A concurrent visual rehabilitation campaign reviewed over 535 building exteriors in the district, issuing 231 free façade renovation permits to commercial and residential property owners. The waivers removed administrative costs for building owners repainting surfaces and removing extraneous facade clutter. A newly built, permanently manned municipal inspection facility now serves as the operational base for civic code officers overseeing field cleanliness, storefront signage, and architectural compliance.

Street safety infrastructure was reinforced through 227 energy-efficient streetlights, 32 pedestrian rest benches, and a district-wide CCTV security monitoring system linked to field authorities.

Project engineers managed construction by segmenting Al Yarmook into seven active operating zones, preserving vehicular access to storefronts and residential blocks throughout civil works. The multi-agency initiative was executed alongside the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, the Department of Planning and Survey, the Directorate of Public Works, Sharjah Police General Command, and the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA).
