Airlines halt Saudi routes, maritime strikes shake the Strait of Hormuz, and global crude benchmarks rally past $110.

DUBAI, Oct. 20, 2026 : Commercial aviation across the Arabian Peninsula faced widespread disruption on Tuesday after aerial strikes targeting Saudi Arabia and reported attacks on shipping corridors prompted carriers to ground flights, while crude oil prices climbed sharply on mounting supply fears.

Major Gulf carriers, including Etihad Airways, Emirates, and flydubai, cancelled passenger services connecting the United Arab Emirates to key Saudi destinations through Saturday, October 24. The widespread grounded routes encompass flights to Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam. While scheduled services between Dubai and Medina remain active on departure schedules, operations at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport have faced prolonged suspensions following military intercepts.

Indian carriers Air India, Air India Express, and IndiGo similarly halted Saudi operations through Saturday, stranding passengers and forcing thousands of expatriates across the region to reschedule transit plans.

Air transit hubs within the UAE experienced cascading departure delays on Tuesday evening. In Abu Dhabi, Etihad pushed back long-haul departures, rescheduling EY391 to Colombo and EY004 to New York by up to an hour and a half. Dubai International Airport posted revisions for evening outbound flights, including SpiceJet’s service to Kochi and IndiGo’s flight to Chandigarh. Aviation officials advised all ticket holders to check real-time flight statuses directly with operators before traveling to airport terminals.

The disruptions follow intense military activity over central Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-led coalition intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh earlier in the day, before neutralizing an armed drone over the capital region. Saudi Civil Defence issued emergency mobile alerts instructing the public to take cover, warning that filming or publishing footage of air defense operations constitutes a prosecutable offense. In response to the escalated threat, the United Kingdom confirmed it will deploy Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters to assist in defending Saudi urban centers and vital energy infrastructure.

Maritime tensions escalated concurrently at the entrance to the Arabian Gulf. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that naval mines struck two commercial oil tankers operating in the southern Strait of Hormuz, asserting the vessels were traversing unauthorized lanes without active transponders. The Iranian military claim has not received independent verification from international maritime monitoring agencies. Addressing the flare-up, Qatari mediators asserted that military escalation offers no resolution and urged diplomatic guarantees for unimpeded freedom of navigation.

Energy markets responded swiftly to the dual airspace and maritime disruptions. West Texas Intermediate crude surged 5.7 percent to settle near $109.60 per barrel, while global benchmark Brent crude gained 2 percent to reach $111.69 per barrel.

Government travel guidance across Western capitals remains cautionary. The United States Department of State maintains a Level 3 advisory for the UAE, recommending citizens reconsider travel due to regional risks. Australia has issued similar guidance, while the UK Foreign Office continues to highlight potential airspace closures and itinerary disruptions despite having lifted broader non-essential travel prohibitions.

On the domestic safety front, international inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency concluded an eight-day mission to the UAE on Tuesday, praising the country’s emergency preparedness and crisis response architecture at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Al Dhafra.
