AI company Anthropic announced on Friday that it will abruptly disable access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models after receiving a directive from the US government to suspend availability for foreign nationals over national security concerns.
According to the company, the export control order requires it to halt access to its flagship AI systems, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all foreign users.
Anthropic said the decision follows a government directive related to export control regulations governing advanced artificial intelligence technologies and their potential strategic implications.
The move comes just days after Anthropic unveiled Claude Fable 5, a new-generation AI model that the company described as belonging to a higher capability category known as “Mythos-class.”
The launch marked a significant step forward in Anthropic’s AI development roadmap, with the company positioning the new model as one of its most powerful systems to date.
The sudden restriction is expected to affect a substantial number of international users and organisations that rely on Anthropic’s advanced AI services outside the United States.
While the company did not provide a timeline for when access might be restored, it indicated that the suspension was being implemented in compliance with the US government’s directive.
The development highlights growing scrutiny by governments around the world regarding the export and international deployment of advanced AI technologies, particularly systems considered capable of delivering strategic, military, cybersecurity, or national security advantages.
Further details regarding the scope of the restrictions and the categories of affected users have not yet been disclosed.
