Digital mobilization across WhatsApp and Facebook ensures the safety of a non-verbal child within hours of going missing.
SHARJAH – In a heartening display of community solidarity, UAE residents and the Sharjah Police successfully reunited a young, non-verbal autistic boy with his family on Tuesday morning, just hours after he was found wandering alone in the Al Nahda area.
The incident unfolded on Monday night when vigilant residents spotted the child outside a residential building in the Juma Al Majid area of Al Nahda, Sharjah. Recognizing the boy’s vulnerability—and unable to ascertain his identity because he is non-verbal—neighbors immediately stepped in to ensure his safety by placing him in the care of building security.
A Digital Call to Action
As building security secured the child, a massive community-led digital campaign was launched. Before law enforcement even arrived on the scene, residents began circulating the boy’s photograph alongside urgent appeals across various WhatsApp and Facebook groups.
“Dear all, please help spread the word and assist in locating this child’s parents or guardians. He is a child with autism and is non-verbal. He was found at B Block, outside the building, near the B Block Masjid side in Sharjah,” read one widely shared online plea.
The digital mobilization quickly transcended neighborhood boundaries. Residents from neighboring emirates joined the effort, amplifying the post across pan-UAE community networks to maximize the chances of reaching the parents.
Police Intervention and Safe Reunion
The child was subsequently handed over to the Sharjah Police. Online updates were promptly modified to reassure the anxious public that the boy was in safe hands while authorities worked to locate his guardians.
The coordinated efforts bore fruit early Tuesday morning. Speaking to the media, the Sharjah Police confirmed that the boy’s family had been traced and the child was safely returned home.
Authorities Issue Warning to Parents
While the Sharjah Police commended the public for their swift response and civic cooperation, they also initiated an investigation into the circumstances that allowed the vulnerable child to wander off unsupervised.
The police revealed that the boy was handed over to his parents only after they signed an official undertaking, legally binding them to ensure that such an incident of negligence does not occur again.
