Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded the contract for Phase 1 of the Dubai Walk Master Plan, marking a major step towards transforming the emirate into a pedestrian-friendly city.

The first phase will be implemented in the historic Al Ras area and includes the development of 12 kilometres of pedestrian walkways and 5 kilometres of cycling tracks. The project also involves the rehabilitation of 10 artistic spaces in collaboration with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, with contributions from Emirati and local artists.

The walkways will connect key heritage landmarks such as Al Ahmadiya School, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, Al Ras Public Library, Al Fahidi Fort, and Al Shindagha Historic District. It will also integrate with 11 metro, public bus, and marine transport stations to enhance first- and last-mile connectivity.

The design approach focuses on preserving the historic character of the area through simplified urban design solutions. Enhancements will include widened walkways, shaded areas, seating spaces, green landscaping, and advanced wayfinding systems.

The Dubai Walk Master Plan aims to develop a total of 6,000 km of walkways across 160 areas by 2040. Additionally, 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses will be constructed to improve connectivity between districts.

The initiative seeks to increase the share of walking and soft mobility trips from 16% in 2025 to 25% by 2040, aligning with the goals of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040 and the “20-minute city” concept.

RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer stated that the project will enhance quality of life, improve urban aesthetics, and reinforce Dubai’s position as a global leader in sustainable and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
