Following a 10-year regulatory licence from the TDRA, the satellite broadband service transitions from pre-orders to commercial rollout

DUBAI — September 3, 2026:SpaceX’s satellite broadband network Starlink has officially activated commercial operations across the United Arab Emirates, Chief Executive Elon Musk confirmed Thursday, marking the company’s formal rollout in one of the Middle East’s key telecommunications markets.

Musk announced the live service on X (formerly Twitter), placing the UAE among more than 150 countries and territories where the low-Earth-orbit constellation provides commercial connectivity. The development shifts Starlink from pre-orders into active consumer and commercial delivery.

The activation comes less than a week after the UAE’s Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) issued Starlink Satellite Communications LLC a 10-year General Space Services Licence on August 28. The regulatory clearance permits the SpaceX subsidiary to establish, operate, and manage a public satellite communications grid, establishing a fully compliant framework under federal telecommunications laws.

Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, Director General of TDRA, noted that licensing satellite broadband adds an orbital layer to the UAE’s existing terrestrial infrastructure, complementing established fibre-optic grids and 5G networks. Regulatory authorities noted the technology strengthens national network resilience, broadens consumer choices, and ensures continuity of services during emergencies.

Beyond standard residential connections, the regulatory authorisation permits Starlink to provide commercial services to enterprises, government bodies, maritime shipping, and commercial aviation.

For domestic consumers, Starlink has priced its standard residential plan at Dh300 per month, offering unlimited data with advertised download speeds reaching up to 400+ Mbps alongside a 30-day trial period. The required hardware package—featuring the Starlink dish and a Router 3 supporting Wi-Fi 6—starts at Dh1,465. Customers pay an upfront deposit of Dh300 at checkout, which the company deducts from the hardware kit’s total price.

High initial demand has triggered order waiting lists across parts of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Starlink’s portal informed new subscribers of potential delivery delays, pointing to a surge in local orders and ongoing regional logistics adjustments, with individual dispatch schedules to be communicated as hardware clears customs and distribution pipelines.
