Malappuram: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is exploring opportunities to capitalize on growing dissatisfaction within the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) following its candidate announcement in Malappuram district.
According to sources, the CPM and LDF are considering fielding senior IUML leader and former MLA Abdurahiman Randathani as an independent candidate. He is reportedly being approached for constituencies such as Tirur, Tanur, or Tirurangadi. While Tirurangadi is currently allocated to the CPI, discussions are said to be ongoing to rework seat arrangements if required.
Randathani has not given a clear response regarding a possible LDF-backed candidature. When asked, he stated that he maintains friendships with CPM leaders but declined further comment.
Meanwhile, there are also reports that another IUML state secretary, Shafi Chaliyam, was approached by the LDF for a possible independent contest from Vallikunnu. However, there has been no official confirmation, and indications suggest he has not responded positively so far.
In a related development, LDF is likely to reshuffle its candidates in the district. Minister V. Abdurahiman, who was earlier announced as an independent candidate in Tanur, may be shifted to Tirur. Reports suggest he was not keen on contesting from Tanur and had not begun active campaigning there.
The LDF is also reportedly considering other leaders, including a Youth Congress figure from Malappuram who was denied a seat in Pattambi.
Political observers note that such independent experiments have previously worked in favor of the LDF in Malappuram. Notable examples include the victories of K.T. Jaleel in 2006 and P.V. Anvar in Nilambur, both of whom contested as LDF-backed independents.
With fresh political realignments underway, Malappuram is expected to witness intense electoral competition in the coming days.
