Authorities release striking video footage warning motorists against leaving engines running and doors unsecured, even for a brief moment.

SHARJAH: In a stark reminder to motorists across the emirate, the Sharjah Police General Command has launched a comprehensive public awareness campaign targeting vehicle theft. The initiative, titled “The Safety of Your Belongings Starts with You,” highlights how minor security oversights can lead to immediate and costly consequences.

The campaign comes in response to incidents where opportunistic thieves have managed to drive away with unsecured vehicles within mere seconds.

The Cost of Carelessness: A Seconds-Long Theft

As part of the initiative, authorities released a realistic awareness video depicting a common scenario on a quiet city street at night. The footage shows a motorist stopping a black Jeep to attend to a quick errand, leaving the vehicle unlocked with the keys inside.

Within moments, a warning appears on the screen: “Don’t leave your car unlocked, others are waiting for the opportunity.” The video then captures a thief dressed in black approaching the vehicle, slipping into the driver’s seat, and speeding away unnoticed.

Sharjah Police emphasized that criminals actively scout for these brief windows of driver carelessness.

Simple Precautions Can Prevent Significant Loss

Law enforcement authorities have renewed their call for all residents and visitors to practice basic vehicle security. Motorists are strictly urged to adhere to the following protocols every time they exit their vehicle, regardless of how brief the duration:

  • Switch off the engine completely.
  • Remove the keys from the ignition or cabin.
  • Lock all doors and ensure windows are fully rolled up.
  • Double-check the vehicle’s security before walking away.

“Many vehicle theft incidents are entirely preventable,” a Sharjah Police spokesperson stated. “Spending just a few seconds to properly secure a vehicle can save motorists from significant financial loss, legal complications, and logistical inconvenience.”

Strengthening Community Vigilance

The ultimate goal of the campaign is to foster responsible behavior among road users and systematically reduce criminal opportunities across Sharjah. By broadcasting these realistic scenarios, the police department hopes to instill a culture of constant vigilance.

For the global expatriate community and Gulf Malayalis residing in the UAE, the advisory serves as a timely reminder that even in a highly secure region, personal responsibility remains the first line of defense against opportunistic crime.
