A 48-year-old Indian expatriate living in Abu Dhabi has regained her mobility and quality of life after undergoing a rare and highly complex spine revision surgery at Medcare Hospital Sharjah, following more than ten years of debilitating neck pain and a previously failed spinal procedure.
Ms. Nisha Dennis had been suffering from chronic neck pain radiating to her left arm and upper back for over a decade. Her condition worsened significantly in recent months, leaving her unable to sleep, walk comfortably, or perform basic daily activities despite extensive physiotherapy and medication. Medical scans revealed severe spinal cord compression caused by abnormal bone growth and dense scar tissue around the C5–6 and C6–7 vertebrae, placing her at serious risk of paralysis.
Seeking advanced care, Ms. Dennis consulted Dr. Bobby Jose, Specialist Neurosurgeon at Medcare Hospital Sharjah, who identified the case as medically rare and extremely challenging due to the presence of a previous spinal fusion, excess bone formation, and extensive scarring.
“The complexity of this case lay in performing a spinal revision nearly ten years after the initial surgery,” said Dr. Jose. “We had to carefully remove earlier implants, drill around the spinal cord, excise abnormal bone growth, and stabilize the spine using an expandable fusion cage — all while ensuring zero neurological damage.”
The five-hour procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary medical team, involving neurosurgery, anaesthesia, radiology, neurophysiology, and postoperative physiotherapy. Advanced intraoperative monitoring played a critical role in ensuring patient safety throughout the surgery.
Ms. Dennis was mobilised within six hours of the operation and discharged just 48 hours later, reporting significant pain relief and improved movement. Within days, she was able to resume normal activities, with doctors confirming an excellent long-term prognosis.
“Her recovery has been remarkable,” Dr. Jose noted. “The use of an expandable fusion cage provided superior spinal stability, allowing for optimal bone growth and long-term success. She is now fully active, pain-free, and doing extremely well.”
Reflecting on her recovery, Ms. Dennis said the surgery had transformed her life. “Every day used to feel like a struggle. Today, I can walk confidently, do my daily chores, spend time with my family, and even travel without fear. I feel like I’ve been given my life back.”
She also encouraged others facing chronic spinal conditions not to lose hope. “With the right doctor and proper medical care, healing is truly possible. I am deeply grateful for this second chance at a pain-free life.”
Medical experts at Medcare Hospital Sharjah highlighted that advances in spine surgery, combined with experienced specialists and modern technology, are enabling safe and successful outcomes even in the most complex cases. The hospital continues to strengthen the UAE’s reputation as a leading destination for advanced, multidisciplinary spine care.
Ms. Dennis continues to attend regular follow-up appointments and has made a full return to normal daily activities.
