The countdown to Ramadan 2026 has officially begun following the sighting of the Rajab crescent moon in Abu Dhabi, marking the start of the seventh month of the Islamic Hijri calendar.
According to local reports, the crescent moon of Rajab was sighted at around 4:30 pm UAE time, signalling the beginning of the final spiritual phase leading up to Ramadan. Rajab holds special significance in Islam as it precedes Sha’ban, the month that prepares Muslims worldwide for the holy month of fasting.
With the commencement of Rajab, attention now turns to the moon sightings of Sha’ban and Ramadan. If both Rajab and Sha’ban complete their usual 29 or 30 days, Ramadan in the UAE is expected to begin in approximately 60 to 61 days, subject to official moon sightings by the relevant authorities.
The Islamic calendar follows a lunar system, meaning the start of each month depends on a combination of astronomical calculations and confirmed moon sightings. As a result, the exact date for the start of Ramadan will only be officially announced closer to the time.
In South Asian countries, Ramadan 2026 is likely to begin on February 19 or 20, while Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall on March 20 or 21, depending on the sighting of the Ramadan and Shawwal moons. However, these dates remain provisional until confirmed by official moon-sighting committees.
Ramadan is Islam’s holiest month, observed by Muslims through fasting from dawn to sunset, increased prayer, reflection, and acts of charity.
