Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), has inaugurated the expansion of the bridge leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport, increasing its capacity by 33% and significantly enhancing traffic flow to the airport.
The project involved increasing the number of traffic lanes from three to four, raising the bridge’s capacity from 4,200 vehicles per hour to 5,600 vehicles per hour. The expansion contributes to smoother traffic movement, reduced journey times, and an improved experience for airport users.
This development forms part of RTA’s ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency of Dubai’s road network and strengthen connectivity between major transport corridors and key facilities. It was implemented in close coordination with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects to ensure alignment with the current and future operational requirements of Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest airport for international passengers, supporting the sustainable growth of passenger and air traffic volumes.
The additional lane was delivered through the construction of a new bridge using an innovative structural system consisting of steel box girders integrated with a composite concrete deck. This advanced engineering solution enabled accelerated construction while eliminating the need for traffic diversions on Airport Street or temporary support structures beneath the bridge. As a result, traffic movement remained uninterrupted, and the highest safety standards were maintained throughout the construction phase.
The project scope also included road pavement improvements, upgrades to utility and supporting infrastructure services, landscaping works to integrate the bridge with the surrounding road network, and the installation of new street lighting systems to enhance visibility and safety.
RTA and Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects reaffirmed their joint commitment to developing infrastructure that supports Dubai’s aviation sector and enhances traffic connectivity to the emirate’s airports. These efforts contribute to improving quality of life, strengthening Dubai’s competitiveness as a global aviation hub, and reinforcing its position as a leading destination for international travel, events, and business.
