Imams and muezzins serving in mosques across Sharjah will now be considered government employees, following a directive issued by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
Under the new decision, imams and muezzins will be integrated into the Sharjah Government’s General Staff system, making them eligible for the same benefits and privileges as other government employees. These include job security, promotion opportunities, health insurance coverage, and official employment status.
In addition, a monthly allowance of Dh3,000 will be provided, taking into account the nature and responsibilities of their work. The directive also allows for leave surrender, in coordination with the Department of Islamic Affairs, for eligible personnel who do not utilise their entitled leave days.
Officials said the move reflects Sharjah’s recognition of the vital role played by imams and muezzins in serving the community and maintaining the spiritual and social fabric of the emirate. The decision aims to enhance job stability, improve working conditions, and honour their contributions to religious life in Sharjah.
