The major infrastructure project aims to ensure smooth vehicular movement and slash travel time between the two emirates.
SHARJAH: In a major relief for thousands of daily commuters, Sharjah has announced plans to construct a new underground tunnel to tackle the persistent traffic congestion between Sharjah and Dubai. The massive infrastructure development aims to streamline traffic flow and significantly reduce travel times during peak hours.
The ambitious tunnel project is expected to provide an alternative, high-capacity route for motorists traveling between the two neighboring emirates. For years, the Sharjah-Dubai bottlenecks—especially on major arteries like E11 (Al Ittihad Road) and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road—have been a major pain point for residents commuting for work and business.
With this new underground link, authorities aim to divert a significant volume of traffic away from traditional surface gridlocks. Urban planning experts note that subterranean solutions are increasingly vital for the UAE’s fast-growing metropolitan areas, where available surface space for highway expansion is limited.
The Sharjah-Dubai commuter corridor is one of the busiest in the Middle East. Despite previous expansions, including bridge updates and lane additions, the influx of vehicles due to rising populations has kept traffic management a top priority for UAE transport authorities. This tunnel marks a strategic shift toward underground infrastructure to handle future traffic demands.
While the exact timeline, cost, and specific entry-exit points of the tunnel are expected to be detailed in the upcoming phases, the announcement has already sent waves of optimism through the UAE’s daily commuting community.
