The UAE Ruler, Prime Minister, and creative visionary is honored globally for pioneering Dubai’s shift from a regional trade outpost into an elite international capital.

DUBAI, UAE – July 15, 2026: The United Arab Emirates officially celebrates the 77th birthday of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Wednesday. The milestone marks over five decades of highly ambitious, visionary governance that successfully reshaped Dubai from a quiet commercial port into a dominant global metropolis.

Born on July 15, 1949, in the historic Al Shindagha neighborhood, Sheikh Mohammed was raised under the direct guidance of his father, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and his grandfather, Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum. His childhood inside the traditional ruling majlis served as his foundational classroom in Arab diplomacy, regional strategy, and community service. Following formal schooling in Dubai, his capabilities led him to the United Kingdom, where he completed advanced military training at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, receiving the prestigious Sword of Honor.

At the young age of 19, he returned home to serve as the Chief of Dubai Police and Public Security. On December 2, 1971, with the official unification and establishment of the United Arab Emirates under founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Mohammed was appointed the nation’s Minister of Defense. The history-making appointment made him the youngest defense minister in the world, a portfolio he managed continuously for over 50 years until transitioning the post to his son, Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, in 2024.

Sheikh Mohammed’s development portfolio expanded rapidly through the late 20th century. Tasked with steering the Dubai Airport committee in 1977, he introduced the Open Skies policy that laid the blueprint for modern global aviation. He later spearheaded the formation of the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ) in 1985, setting up the industrial foundations for massive international trade corporations like DP World and Emirates Airline.

Appointed Crown Prince of Dubai in 1995 and succeeding as the Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the UAE in 2006, Sheikh Mohammed launched a historic era of architectural and digital engineering. He personally initiated and supervised iconic megaprojects including the Palm Islands, Burj Al Arab, Dubai Marina, and the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Concurrently, he modernized federal administration by enforcing the “UAE Vision 2021” strategy, which fully digitized public administration into highly modern smart government services.

Beyond his executive leadership, His Highness is widely recognized as a master of traditional Nabati poetry, publishing numerous historic verses under early pseudonyms like “Nidawi.” He is also globally celebrated as Faris Al Arab (The Arab Knight) within equestrian sports. He founded the world-renowned Godolphin horse racing team and established the Dubai World Cup in 1996, transforming the emirate into an elite international hub for sports, culture, and economic innovation.
