The UAE will ring in 2026 with fireworks, celebrations, and varying New Year holiday arrangements for residents across the country. While January 1 has been confirmed as a nationwide public holiday, the length and structure of the break will differ depending on employment sector and emirate.
Although some residents were hoping for a transferred public holiday to create a longer break, official announcements confirm that January 1, 2026, will be observed on its scheduled date. However, opportunities for extended time off remain available through remote work options, long weekends, and annual leave planning.
January 1 Declared Public Holiday
Private sector employees across the UAE will receive a paid public holiday on Thursday, January 1, 2026, as confirmed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). The decision follows a Cabinet resolution outlining official holidays for both public and private sectors.
Although New Year’s Day is among the holidays eligible for transfer, most employees are expected to resume work on Friday, January 2, unless their employer announces alternative arrangements.
Remote Work Option for Federal Employees
Federal government employees will also observe January 1 as a public holiday. In addition, Friday, January 2, 2026, has been designated as a remote working day, allowing employees to manage work commitments while spending time with family.
Staff whose roles require on-site presence will continue to report to work as usual, according to federal authorities.
Sharjah Public Sector to Enjoy Four-Day Break
Public sector employees in Sharjah will benefit from a four-day long weekend. As January 1 falls on a Thursday and Friday is already part of the emirate’s three-day weekend, government offices will resume operations on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Additional Year-End Leave for Some Workers
While Christmas Day is not an official public holiday in the UAE, several companies — particularly in finance, consulting, and technology sectors — offer internal year-end leave ranging from a single day to an entire week.
Some employers also grant leave on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, extending the year-end break. These internal policies vary by employer and do not replace annual leave entitlements.
Annual Leave Planning Opportunities
Public holidays in the UAE offer employees the chance to maximise time off through strategic leave planning. With January 1 falling on a Thursday, taking annual leave on Friday, January 2, allows for a four-day break including the weekend.
Other public holidays in 2026, including Eid Al Fitr, Eid Al Adha, Hijri New Year, Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday, and UAE National Day (Eid Al Etihad), may also offer extended breaks through transferable dates or combined annual leave.
Compensation for Essential Workers
Employees required to work on official public holidays are entitled to compensation under UAE Labour Law. Employers must either provide a substitute rest day or pay the regular wage for that day along with an additional 50 per cent bonus on the basic salary.
