Emirates becomes the second country globally to greenlight the blockbuster oral weight-loss drug, eliminating the need for weekly injections.
ABU DHABI — In a major milestone for global healthcare, the United Arab Emirates has officially approved the once-daily oral formulation of Wegovy (semaglutide) for long-term weight management. The decision, announced by the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE), makes the UAE only the second country in the world to authorize the highly anticipated weight-loss pill, following its initial approval in the United States earlier this year.
Manufactured by Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk, the newly approved oral tablet is indicated for adults living with obesity, or those who are overweight and experiencing at least one weight-related medical complication. Unlike the previous blockbuster injectable version of Wegovy, which requires weekly subcutaneous injections and strict cold-chain refrigeration, the oral pill offers a highly stable, non-invasive alternative that can be stored at room temperature.
The regulatory approval carries profound implications for public health. Clinical trial data reviewed by the EDE demonstrated that the oral GLP-1 receptor agonist significantly reduces body weight when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Beyond weight loss, the clinical evidence confirmed a substantial secondary benefit: oral Wegovy successfully reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE)—including cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attacks, and strokes—in high-risk patients.
A Strategic Move for the UAE Healthcare Ecosystem
The regulatory greenlight reflects the UAE’s broader strategy to position itself as a fast-adapting global leader in medical innovation and early patient access.
Dr. Fatma Al Kaabi, Director General of the Emirates Drug Establishment, emphasized that the decision aligns with the nation’s proactive approach to combating chronic metabolic diseases:
“Approving the oral formulation of Wegovy reaffirms the establishment’s commitment to promoting the pharmaceutical ecosystem and reinforcing a proactive approach to addressing obesity and overweight challenges, which are among the key drivers of chronic disease. This move reflects the UAE’s keenness to adopt the latest pharmaceutical innovations and develop a flexible regulatory environment that ensures patient access to these treatments in accordance with the highest standards, further strengthening treatment outcomes and the overall quality of care.”
Healthcare analysts note that the introduction of oral alternatives could dramatically stabilize supply chains. Global markets have faced persistent shortages of injectable weight-loss treatments due to surging demand and production bottlenecks for injection pens. By shifting to a tablet formulation, production capacity can expand more rapidly to meet patient needs.
Convenience and Patient Adherence
Medical professionals have welcomed the oral formulation, pointing out that daily pills drastically lower the entry barrier for patients who suffer from needle anxiety or find weekly injections disruptive to their routines.
Venkat Kalyan, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Gulf, underscored the collaborative effort required to achieve early rollout in the region:
“Our collaboration with the Emirates Drug Establishment is a testament to our shared commitment to providing innovative and trusted treatment solutions. Semaglutide has a well-established safety profile and is widely trusted within the medical community, while its once-daily oral formulation offers greater convenience and supports patient adherence to treatment.”
The pill is taken once daily on an empty stomach in the morning with a small amount of water. Medical practitioners emphasize that oral Wegovy is designed to act as a pharmacological behavior modification tool—not a standalone miracle cure—and must be integrated with sustainable lifestyle changes to ensure long-term efficacy.
Background and Regional Impact
The deployment of oral semaglutide is expected to be highly relevant for the Gulf region, where modern lifestyles have contributed to historically high rates of metabolic disorders, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular complications. Recent economic assessments have highlighted that proactive medical interventions against adult obesity could significantly lower long-term public healthcare expenditures.
The initial batches of oral Wegovy have already arrived in the UAE. Market experts predict pricing structure models will align closely with competing oral treatments already circulating in the market, bridging the gap between specialized care and broader outpatient accessibility.
