President Sheikh Mohamed and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid honour the Founding Fathers, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to solidarity and future generations
ABU DHABI:The leaders of the United Arab Emirates on Saturday marked Union Pledge Day by reaffirming their steadfast commitment to preserving national unity and protecting the constitutional achievements of the federation.
UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, paid tribute to the nation’s Founding Fathers, emphasizing that the historic agreement signed more than five decades ago remains the guiding compass for the country’s future.
Union Pledge Day commemorates July 18, 1971, the historic date when the Founding Rulers signed the Declaration of the Union and approved the UAE Constitution. This milestone laid the legal and political groundwork for the formal establishment of the United Arab Emirates as a unified nation on December 2 of that same year.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed highlighted the enduring significance of the anniversary. He noted that the day serves as an essential occasion to renew the nation’s commitment to the core principles of unity established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his fellow Founding Rulers. The President added that the signing of the initial declaration marked a defining moment in the nation’s history, stating that as the UAE accelerates its modern development, it remains anchored to the fundamental values that continue to inspire future generations.
Reiterating the sentiment of solidarity, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasized the continuous duty of the state to guard the federation’s legacy. He described Union Pledge Day as a moment of national renewal, focusing on collective determination to reinforce the nation’s core foundations.
“Union Pledge… the day the Founding Fathers agreed on the idea of the Union and the Constitution of the Union,” Sheikh Mohammed wrote on X. “The day we renew our pledge to preserve this Union… renew our determination to strengthen this foundation… and renew our solidarity to safeguard our achievements and build the future of the Union’s generations.”
The annual anniversary highlights the constitutional continuity of the UAE, emphasizing the strategic vision of the early rulers who unified the emirates under a singular flag and legal framework, facilitating the rapid socio-economic transformation of the modern Gulf state.
