Crucial Kharge-Rahul Meeting Concludes; Official Declaration Expected Tomorrow as Allies and Community Leaders React
NEW DELHI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — Ending ten days of intense political suspense following the Assembly election results, the Congress high command is set to announce the next Chief Minister of Kerala on Thursday, May 14. The breakthrough comes after a series of high-level deliberations in the national capital, with indications strongly suggesting that V.D. Satheesan has emerged as the preferred choice for the top post.
The timeline for the announcement was confirmed by Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary in charge of Communications, on Wednesday. His statement followed a significant 45-minute one-on-one meeting between Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at the latter’s residence. “All discussions on the issue have concluded. The decision on who the Chief Minister of Kerala will be will be declared on Thursday,” Ramesh informed reporters.
The Shift in Momentum
While the race for the Chief Minister’s chair saw intense internal lobbying, several factors have converged to bolster Satheesan’s candidacy. Reports suggest that the Congress leadership was briefed by independent observers that the public groundswell of support for Satheesan was spontaneous rather than orchestrated by factional managers.
Earlier attempts to portray public marches as “engineered” reportedly miffed Rahul Gandhi; however, subsequent intelligence regarding “image-tarnishing” campaigns against Satheesan appears to have swung the pendulum back in his favor. This includes a controversial report by a party-linked channel regarding an alleged meeting with an Adani official—an accusation the high command eventually viewed as a sabotage attempt after it was weaponized by the CPM.
Reactions from Allies and Community Leaders
The potential elevation of Satheesan has already triggered ripples across Kerala’s socio-political landscape. NSS General Secretary Sukumaran Nair, a known critic of Satheesan, held a hurried press conference shortly after the Delhi announcement. Nair lashed out at the IUML, questioning their involvement in Congress’s internal matters—a move seen by analysts as a last-ditch effort to influence the high command’s decision.
Conversely, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) signaled a softening of its stance. The party cancelled a high-level meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening, reportedly after receiving assurances from the Congress leadership that “public sentiment”—a term widely understood as code for Satheesan’s leadership—would be respected. Additionally, P.J. Joseph of the Kerala Congress emphasized that the Chief Minister should be chosen from the pool of newly elected MLAs.
The LDF Factor
Ironically, the LDF’s criticism may have strengthened Satheesan’s position. When LDF Convenor T.P. Ramakrishnan demanded an AICC response to allegations against Satheesan, it created a perception that the CPM was actively trying to thwart his candidacy. Within Congress circles, the logic prevailed that the candidate the opposition fears most is the one best suited for the role.
With all eyes now on New Delhi, Thursday’s announcement will not only decide the leadership of the state but also set the tone for the Congress-led government’s relationship with its allies and powerful community organizations in Kerala.
