Marie Ngah scores twice in Rabat as the Indomitable Lionesses end years of finals heartbreak with a commanding 3-0 victory.
RABAT, Morocco — Cameroon captured their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Sunday, defeating debutants Malawi 3-0 in a one-sided final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
striker Marie Ngah scored twice in the first half to anchor the victory, ending Cameroon’s long streak of finals heartbreak after three previous runner-up finishes.
The Indomitable Lionesses took complete control of the match early in Rabat. Ngah opened the scoring in the 20th minute, pouncing on a loose ball inside the penalty box after Malawi’s defense failed to clear a set-piece.
Naomi Eto doubled the advantage 10 minutes later with a crisp strike into the bottom corner. Malawi struggled to contain Cameroon’s physical press and conceded a third deep into first-half injury time when Ngah completed her brace following an assist from Eto.
Malawi, ranked 153rd in the world, entered the final after a fairytale tournament run. Despite the defeat, both finalists—alongside semi-finalists Morocco and Algeria—secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Algeria clinched the bronze medal on Saturday after defeating hosts Morocco in a penalty shootout.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe and FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the trophy and medals during the post-match ceremony.
Cameroon became just the fourth nation to win the continental crown since the tournament was inaugurated in 1998, joining 10-time champions Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea (two titles), and South Africa (one title).
