Internal Restructuring Looming as Top Leaders Vacate Organisational Posts for Legislative Roles
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM – Following a landslide victory in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress is preparing for a comprehensive organisational shake-up. The party, which led the United Democratic Front (UDF) to a decisive mandate, now faces the task of replacing several key leaders who are transitioning from party administration to legislative and potentially ministerial duties.
The most significant vacancy will be at the helm of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Current president Sunny Joseph, who secured a high-profile victory in Peravoor by defeating senior CPM leader K.K. Shylaja, is expected to step down to join the new UDF Cabinet. His move has triggered intense speculation regarding his successor, with veteran leader Benny Behanan emerging as a primary contender for the state’s top party post.
DCC Leadership Transition
The “one person, one post” principle is likely to necessitate a change in leadership across several districts where District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents successfully contested the polls:
- Kozhikode: DCC President K. Praveen Kumar, who wrested the LDF stronghold of Koyilandy with a margin of 12,070 votes, submitted his resignation on Tuesday. P.M. Niyaz is widely tipped to take over the district leadership.
- Thiruvananthapuram: DCC chief N. Shakthan won from Neyyattinkara, potentially making way for V.S. Sivakumar to lead the district unit.
- Ernakulam: Muhammed Shiyas, credited with maintaining the district as a party powerhouse, won by over 8,000 votes, leaving a leadership vacuum in one of the state’s most active units.
- Malappuram & Kottayam: DCC presidents V.S. Joy (Thavanur) and Nattakom Suresh (Ettumanoor) secured comfortable victories, adding their names to the list of leaders moving to the Legislative Assembly.
Balancing Governance and Organisation
While the party celebrates its electoral success, the results were not uniform for all district heads. In Palakkad, DCC president A. Thankappan faced defeat in Nenmara, and in Pathanamthitta, Satheesh Kochuparambil lost the Konni seat.
The AICC leadership is expected to hold formal consultations with the state unit once the government formation process is complete. The upcoming reshuffle is viewed as a critical step in maintaining the momentum of the “UDF tsunami,” ensuring that the party’s grassroots machinery remains robust while its senior leaders focus on governance.
