THIRUVANANTHAPURAM – The fate of Kerala’s political landscape for the next five years will be decided today, May 4, as the counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly Elections commences at 8:00 AM. After a high-octane campaign that saw the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) seeking a historic third consecutive term and the United Democratic Front (UDF) fighting to reclaim its traditional alternating power, the state remains gripped by intense anticipation.
The counting process will take place across 140 centres at 43 locations statewide. According to the Election Commission, the exercise will begin with the processing of postal ballots, followed by the counting of votes from Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). A massive workforce of 15,465 officials, including 140 Returning Officers and over 4,200 micro-observers, has been deployed to ensure a transparent and seamless process.
The Battle of Alliances
The 2026 polls were marked by distinct narratives from the three major fronts:
- LDF: Led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the Left focused its campaign on its welfare track record and developmental projects, aiming to break the historical trend and secure a “hat-trick” victory.
- UDF: The Congress-led opposition placed its trust in anti-incumbency sentiments and its strong performance in recent local body and Lok Sabha polls. Leaders like V.D. Satheesan have expressed confidence that the high voter turnout indicates a desire for change.
- NDA: The BJP-led alliance, spearheaded locally by figures like Rajeev Chandrasekhar, utilized a strategy of social engineering, hoping to significantly expand its footprint beyond its traditional strongholds.
Crucial Turnout and Political Significance
A significant factor in this election is the tentative voter turnout of 79.70%, one of the highest in the state’s recent history. Traditionally, a surge in polling percentage is viewed through various lenses—either as a mandate for continuity or a silent wave for change.
Adding to the emotional and political gravity of the day, K.K. Rema, MLA, noted that May 4 coincides with the 14th martyrdom anniversary of T.P. Chandrasekharan. She remarked that the results would serve as a form of “poetic justice” and a reckoning for the CPM leadership.
Security and Logistics
Security has been tightened across all counting stations, with heavy police presence to prevent any untoward incidents. Strong rooms housing the EVMs were opened early this morning in the presence of candidates and political agents. Early trends are expected to emerge by 10:00 AM, providing a clearer picture of whether Pinarayi Vijayan will retain his seat of power or if the UDF will make a triumphant return to the Secretariat.
