Islamabad: High-level peace talks between the United States and Iran have commenced in Islamabad, marking a crucial diplomatic effort to stabilise the Middle East after weeks of escalating tensions. The negotiations are being hosted by Pakistan, which has stepped in as a mediator to bring both sides to the table following a fragile ceasefire agreement.

Senior delegations from Washington and Tehran arrived in the Pakistani capital under tight security, reflecting the sensitivity of the discussions. The talks are aimed at transforming the temporary ceasefire into a more durable agreement, even as mistrust and disagreements continue to linger between the two countries.

A major focus of the negotiations is the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical النفط shipping routes. Iran’s recent actions in the region have disrupted global oil supplies, raising concerns among Gulf nations and the international community. The United States has insisted that the waterway must remain open for international navigation, while Iran is seeking greater control and leverage over the passage.

The ceasefire itself remains fragile, with both sides accusing each other of violations in recent days. Disputes have also emerged over whether the truce extends to conflict zones such as Lebanon, adding further complexity to the talks. Diplomats say these issues will be central to determining whether a long-term agreement can be achieved.

Iran has reportedly demanded relief from economic sanctions and the release of frozen financial assets as part of any deal. On the other hand, the United States is pushing for strict limitations on Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes, along with assurances of regional de-escalation. These competing demands underscore the deep divisions that negotiators must overcome.

Pakistan’s role as host has been widely noted, with officials in Islamabad emphasising the importance of dialogue and regional stability. Gulf countries are also closely watching the talks, given their economic and strategic stakes in the outcome, particularly concerning energy security.

While there is cautious optimism surrounding the negotiations, analysts warn that the path to a comprehensive peace agreement remains uncertain. The Islamabad talks are being seen as a decisive moment that could either ease tensions in the region or lead to renewed confrontation if differences persist.
