US President Donald Trump has warned Canada that it will face a 100 percent tariff on all goods entering the United States if it proceeds with a trade agreement with China. The warning comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Ottawa following Canada’s move to strengthen economic ties with Beijing.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently described a new strategic partnership with China as a landmark step aimed at reducing tariffs and expanding trade. However, Trump accused Canada of potentially allowing China to use it as a gateway to the US market, a move he strongly opposed. In a statement, Trump said Canada would face immediate and severe trade consequences if such an agreement is finalized.
Relations between the two countries have remained strained since Trump returned to the White House, with repeated disputes over trade, tariffs, and global economic leadership. Carney recently spoke of a “rupture” in the US-led global order, remarks widely seen as criticism of Trump’s foreign policy approach.
Canada remains heavily dependent on trade with the United States, with more than three-quarters of its exports destined for the US market. Analysts warn that a blanket tariff could significantly impact key Canadian industries such as automobiles, steel, and aluminum, while also disrupting cross-border supply chains.
Despite the tensions, Carney has emphasized Canada’s sovereignty and economic independence, while acknowledging the long-standing partnership between the two nations.
