Low-cost giant becomes launch customer for new 160-seat configuration in a strategic move to dominate Asian and Central Asian routes.
MIRABEL, Canada — In a move set to redefine the landscape of budget travel across Asia, AirAsia has placed a historic order for 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The landmark agreement, announced at Airbus’ production facility in Mirabel, marks a significant pivot for the carrier as it seeks to establish the world’s first truly global low-cost network.
The deal was formalized in the presence of Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Advisor to AirAsia Group, and Lars Wagner, CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus. Notable dignitaries, including Mark Carney and Christine Frechette, also attended the ceremony, underscoring the economic magnitude of the transaction.
A New Chapter in Aviation Efficiency
The acquisition makes AirAsia the launch customer for a specialized 160-seat layout of the A220. This high-density configuration is achieved through the addition of an extra overwing exit on each side of the fuselage, allowing the airline to maximize capacity while maintaining the operational efficiencies for which the A220 is renowned.
Tony Fernandes characterized the decision as a “bold move” during a critical juncture for the industry.
“This order reflects our long-term discipline and the scale of our ambitions. The A220 unlocks new markets and routes, bringing us closer to building the world’s first true low-cost network carrier,” Fernandes stated. He further noted that the two-decade partnership with Airbus remains the cornerstone of AirAsia’s growth strategy.
Strategic Network Growth
The A220-300, capable of flying up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 kilometers), provides the ideal middle ground for AirAsia’s fleet. By deploying these jets on routes across the ASEAN region and into Central Asia, the airline can free up its larger aircraft for longer-haul operations.
Lars Wagner of Airbus emphasized that the A220’s low operating costs and impressive range make it an optimal platform for AirAsia’s revised network strategy. As of March 2026, Airbus has delivered over 500 A220 units to 25 operators globally, proving the aircraft’s reliability in various market conditions.
Commitment to Sustainability
In addition to fleet modernization, the deal aligns with global environmental goals. The A220 is currently capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all its aircraft are compatible with 100% SAF by 2030, a factor that complements AirAsia’s long-term sustainability roadmap.
This record-breaking order not only strengthens AirAsia’s position in its core markets but also signals a robust recovery and aggressive expansion phase for the low-cost carrier in the post-pandemic era.
